Izzy Gets 300, Mets Win in 10
On Monday night in San Diego, Jason Isringhausen finally picked up save number 300.  Not many people expected 300 to be a realistic milestone for this season with KRod the Mets closer and a line of relievers ahead of Izzy on the depth chart.
After the Mets signed Isringhause in the offseason off the scrap heap he worked his way back and established himself as a solid 8th inning option.  With the departure of KRod, he stepped into the closer role where he once thrived with Oakland and St. Louis.
Izzy came on in the 10th to pick up the save. Wait, the 10th?  Yes - the 10th.  It wasn’t enough that the Mets were played on the west coast, they had to play extra innings to make sure the fan base was up nice and late, or missed the milestone.
With a 4-1 lead fueled by Josh Thole (3-3) and Lucas Duda (3-4), RA Dickey gave up a two run homer to Will Venable in the 7th.  Venable had a solid game, going 2-4 with a very agile missed diving catch in the right field corner, in which he popped up and held David Wright to a double and kept Justin Turner on third.  The Mets were unable to push any runs across that inning and so this play proved to be big.
Bobby Parnell came into the game in the 7th and gave up a run in the 8th to tie the game.  At this point, Dickey would no longer qualify for the win.
Moments after the game, Dickey was gracious as always, tweeting “Thanks everybody for the well wishes and encouragement. This night should be about izzy. I appreciate everyones words. We will keep fighting”
With the game still tied going into the 10th, the Mets played some small ball.  Jason Pridie drew a leadoff walk, which is never good news for the pitcher.  Thole tried to bunt him over, but instead himself was walked.  Ruben Tejada put down a successful sacrifice bunt to the third base side and Scott Hairston rocketed a ball on the ground to the hole between Third and Short.  The Padres’ Alberto Gonzalez knocked it down and was able to get Thole for the fielder’s choice but Pridie was able to score the go-ahead run.
Isringhausen came into the game in the 10th and worked around a walk and a single for number three hundred.  On the final play to Short you could see him jump slightly with excitement followed by a little fist pump and all smiles.  The team mobbed him on the mound during the traditional post game handshakes.
Summary:  Isringhausen picks up a milestone save, #300.  He’s the third pitcher to do so in a Mets uniform (John Franco and Billy Wagner were the others).
Josh Thole is coming around, reaching base 5 times with 2 walks and 3 hits, including a home run.
Lucas Duda went 3-4 with a walk and an RBI.  He should have had a second RBI in the 7th but the ball hit the umpire.  He also made a nifty play, diving into the stands, for a fly ball.
Jason Pridie had an all around nice game, going 1-2, working three walks and scoring three runs to go with a nice diving play in right field.
Jon Niese starts Tuesday night in San Diego when the Mets try to take the series.
